সহজ পদ্ধতিতে শিখুন ইংরেজী গ্রামার - Changing Sentences (Part-03)

আমাদের দেশের অধিকাংশ শিক্ষার্থী ইংরেজীকে প্রচন্ড রকমের ভয় পায়। এজন্য ইংরেজীর দুর্বলতা কাটিয়ে উঠতে পারে না। তাদের এই দুর্বলতা ও ভয় দূর করার লক্ষে আমরা ইংরেজী গ্রামারে একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ Changing Sentences আজকের এই আলোচনায় সহজ ও সাবলীল ভাষায় উপস্থাপন করার চেষ্টা করেছি। Changing Sentences-এর নিয়মগুলো খুব সহজ পদ্ধতিতে নিম্নে উপস্থাপন করা হল।

Compound to Simple

1. And যুক্ত Compound Sentence-এর উভয় Clause-এর Subject যদি এক হয় এবং উভয় Clause-এ মূল Verb থাকলে Simple Sentence-এ রূপান্তর করার সময় প্রথম clause-এর Verb-এর Present form-এর সাথে ing যোগ করতে হয় + উক্ত Verb-এর পরের অংশ + and-এর পরিবর্তে Comma (,) বসে + দ্বিতীয় Clause-এর Subject-এর পরিবর্তে প্রথম clause-এর Subject + দ্বিতীয় clause-এর বাকি অংশ বসে।

• Compound: The old man killed the bird and brought bad luck to the crew.
  Simple: Killing the bird, the old man brought bad luck to the crew.

• Compound: Della sold her hair and bought a platinum fob chain.
  Simple: Selling her hair, Della bought a platinum fob chain.

2. And যুক্ত Compound Sentence-এর দুটি Clause-এর Subject ভিন্ন হলে এবং প্রথম Clause-টিতে am/is/are/was/were/have/has/had থাকলে Simple Sentence-এ রূপান্তর করার সময় প্রথম Clause-এর am/is/are/was/were-এর পরিবর্তে being বসে বা have/has/had-এর পরিবর্তে having বসে এবং and-এর পরিবর্তে Comma (,) বসে।

• Compound: The marriage ceremony was over and the guests were all going to the feast.
  Simple: The marriage ceremony being over, the guests were all going to the feast.

• Compound: The sun had set and we returned hotel.
  Simple: The sun having set, we returned hotel.

3. Or যুক্ত Compound Sentence-কে Simple Sentence-এ রূপান্তর করার সময় প্রথমে Without বসে + প্রথম clause-এর মূল verb-এর সাথে ing যোগ করতে হয় + প্রথম clause-এর মূল verb-এর পরের অংশ বসে + or-এর পরিবর্তে Comma (,) বসে + দ্বিতীয় Clause-টি বসে।

• Compound: Work hard or you will not prosper in life.
  Simple: Without working hard, you will not prosper in life.

• Compound: Read attentively or you cannot pass the examination.
  Simple: Without reading attentively, you cannot pass the examination.

4. And যুক্ত Compound Sentence-এর উভয় Clause-এর Subject যদি এক হয় এবং একটি Clause অপরটির কারণ বুঝায় তখন Simple Sentence-এ রূপান্তর করার সময় প্রথমে Because of বসে + প্রথম Clause-টির Subject-এর Possessive form বসে + am/is/are/was/were-এর পরিবর্তে being বসে বা has/have/had-এর পরিবর্তে having বসে বা মূল verb-এর সাথে ing যুক্ত হয় + প্রথম Clause-টির বাকী অংশ বসে + and-এর পরিবর্তে Comma (,) বসে + দ্বিতীয় Clause-টি বসে।

• Compound: He is ill and he cannot move an inch.
  Simple: Because of his being ill, he cannot move an inch.

• Compound: He has much money and he can buy a flat.
  Simple: Because of his having much money, he can buy a flat.

5. And যুক্ত Compound Sentence-এর And-এর আগের Clause-টি Imperative হলে Simple করার সময় ঐ Clause-টির আগে By বসিয়ে Verb-এর সাথে ing যোগ করতে হয় এবং সেটি আগে আসে এবং And তুলে দিয়ে Sentence-এর বাকি অংশ বসাতে হয়।

• Compound: Work hard and you will succeed.
  Simple: By working hard you will succeed.

6. But যুক্ত Compound Sentence-কে Simple Sentence-এ রূপান্তর করার নিয়ম— প্রথমে In spite of বসে + প্রথম Clause-টির Subject-এর Possessive form বসে + am/is/are/was/were-এর পরিবর্তে being বসে বা has/have/had-এর পরিবর্তে having বসে বা মূল verb-এর সাথে ing যুক্ত হয় + but-এর পরিবর্তে comma (,) বসে + দ্বিতীয় Clause-টি বসে।

• Compound: He is ill but he can run fast.
  Simple: In spite of his being ill, he can run fast.

• Compound: I ran fast but I could not get the train.
  Simple: In spite of my running fast, I could not get the train.

7. সময় নির্দেশক Compound Sentence-কে Simple Sentence করার নিয়ম— সময়বাচক Clause-এর Subject (it) ও Verb উঠে গিয়ে সময় নির্দেশক অংশটি বসে + and এর পরিবর্তে comma (,) বসে + বাকী অংশ বসে।

• Compound: It was twenty years ago and I was living in Paris.
  Simple: Twenty years ago, I was living in Paris.

8. Not only – but also যুক্ত Compound Sentence-এ ‘not only – but also’ যদি Subject সম্বন্ধীয় হয় অর্থাৎ Subject দুটি আলাদা হলে তাকে Simple Sentence-এ পরিণত করতে হলে— প্রথমে Besides বসে + তারপর প্রথম Subject বসে + প্রথম Clause-এর বাকী অংশ উঠে যায় + দ্বিতীয় Clause-এর Subject সহ সম্পূর্ণ বসে, শুধুমাত্র but also উঠে যায়।

• Compound: Not only Nadim but also Fahim went to mosque.
  Simple: Besides Nadim, Fahim went to mosque.

• Compound: Not only we but also they attended the meeting.
  Simple: Beside we, they attended the meeting.

9. Not only – but also যুক্ত Compound Sentence-এ দুটি Clause-এ Verb যদি ভিন্ন ভিন্ন হয় কিন্তু Subject একই হয় তবে তাকে Simple Sentence-এ রূপান্তর করতে হলে— প্রথমে Besides বসে + প্রথম Clause-এর শুরু থেকে Main Verb-এর পূর্ব পর্যন্ত উঠে যায় এবং Main verb-এর সাথে ing যুক্ত হয় + প্রথম Clause-এর বাকী অংশ বসে + দ্বিতীয় Clause-এর শুরুতে Subject বসে + দ্বিতীয় Clause-এর বাকী অংশ বসে।

• Compound: The girl not only ate butter but also drank milk.
  Simple: Besides eating butter, the girl drank milk.

• Compound: Mr Nasir not only teaches English but also writes novels.
  Simple: Besides teaching English, Mr Nasir writes novels.

10. Either — Or যুক্ত Compound Sentence-কে Simple Sentence-এ রূপান্তর করতে হলে— প্রথমে In case of not বসে + তারপর Clause-এর Main verb-এর পূর্ব পর্যন্ত উঠে যায় + Main verb-এর Root form-এর সাথে 'ing' যোগ করতে হয় + Or-এর পরিবর্তে Comma (,) বসে + দ্বিতীয় Clause বসে।

• Compound: Either take coffee or tea.
  Simple: In case of not taking coffee, take tea.

• Compound: Either earn money or depend on your family.
  Simple: In case of not earning money, depend on your family.

11. Neither–nor যুক্ত Compound Sentence-কে Simple Sentence-এ রূপান্তর করতে হলে— প্রথমে Besides বসে + তারপর not বসে + am/is/are/was/were থাকলে তার পরিবর্তে Being বসে বা Have/has/had –এর পরিবর্তে having বা Main verb থাকলে Main verb-এর Root form + ing বসে + প্রথম Clause-এর neither উঠে গিয়ে বাকি অংশ বসে + nor–এর পরিবর্তে Comma (,) বসে + দ্বিতীয় Clause বসে।

• Compound: The hotel is neither cheap nor comfortable.
  Simple: Besides not being cheap, the hotel is not comfortable.

• Compound: Your dress is neither beautiful nor fashionable.
  Simple: Besides not being beautiful, your dress is not fashionable.

12. Compound Sentence-এর দুটি Clause যদি and দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকে এবং দ্বিতীয় Clause-এ যদি want to, wants to, wanted to, hope to, hopes to, hoped to, desire to, desires to, desired to ইত্যাদি verb থাকে এবং তা দিয়ে যদি উদ্দেশ্য বুঝায় তবে Simple Sentence-এ রূপান্তর করতে হলে— প্রথম Clause অপরিবর্তিত অবস্থায় বসে + and থেকে শুরু করে দ্বিতীয় Clause-এর Main verb-এর পূর্ব পর্যন্ত উঠে যায় + তারপর to বা in order to বসে + তারপর Main Verb-এর Root form বসে + বাকি অংশ বসে।

• Compound: He worked hard and wanted to prosper in life.
  Simple: He worked hard in order to/to prosper in life.

• Compound: I read more and wanted to make a good result.
  Simple: I read more in order to/to make a good result.

13. Compound Sentence-এর দুটি Clause যদি and দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকে এবং প্রথম Clause-এ যদি very + adjective এবং দ্বিতীয় Clause-এ যদি cannot/could not থাকে তবে Simple Sentence-এ রূপান্তর করতে হলে— প্রথম Clause-এর verb উঠে গিয়ে too বসে + and থেকে শুরু করে cannot/could not পর্যন্ত উঠে গিয়ে to বসে + বাকি অংশ বসে।

• Compound: He is very weak and cannot walk.
  Simple: He is too weak to walk.

• Compound: He is very poor and cannot buy a computer.
  Simple: He is too poor to buy a computer.

• Compound: He is very dishonest and cannot speak the truth.
  Simple: He is too dishonest to speak the truth.
